Surface and Undercurrents
Surface and Undercurrents: Influences from Iceland, the Arctic & the Anthropocene was a collaborative group exhibition that explored environmental themes. Ideas for this exhibit were developed during the artists' retreat in Iceland during the summer of 2023 that was sponsored by ProMair.
Each artist brought a focus on issues related to human-caused climate change and environmental responsibility, from the rise of invasive species (including humans!), the toll of polluting industries, melting of the glaciers and sea-level rise, technology, and the impact of tourism, over-fishing, and over-consumption.
These are challenges that face not only the Arctic region and Iceland, but also here at home in North Carolina.
The exhibition included sound and video installations, sculptural objects in a range of disciplines, original acrylic monoprints and collages, and other functional art that wrestles with these issues.
Other participating artists: Lisa LeMair, Christina Weisner, Ashley Paskov, Christopher Proto, Wendy Allen, Scott Solter.
